After a car accident, one of the first steps in your claim is to notify all concerned parties that you were injured. You'll probably want to send a separate notification letter to:
- the other driver
- the other driver's insurance carrier, and
- your own insurance carrier
Your notification should be a simple typed letter that provides only basic information and requests a written response. The notification should never get into issues like fault for the accident or the extent of your injuries. The time for discussing those things will come later on. For now, just include the date, approximate time of day, and general location of the accident. And if your letter is being sent directly to an insurance company, ask that they confirm by return letter who they represent, and whether they are aware of anyone else who might be responsible for the accident.
Below are two sample notification letters that might be sent after a car accident, using "Maria Jones" as our fictional injured driver.
