After a car accident, one of the first steps in your claim is to notify all concerned parties that you were injured. You'll probably want to send a separate notification letter to:

  • the other driver
  • the other driver's insurance carrier, and
  • your own insurance carrier

Your notification should be a simple typed letter that provides only basic information and requests a written response. The notification should never get into issues like fault for the accident or the extent of your injuries. The time for discussing those things will come later on. For now, just include the date, approximate time of day, and general location of the accident. And if your letter is being sent directly to an insurance company, ask that they confirm by return letter who they represent, and whether they are aware of anyone else who might be responsible for the accident.

Below are two sample notification letters that might be sent after a car accident, using "Maria Jones" as our fictional injured driver.

Re: Insured, Maria Jones
Policy No. 9HQ-678-B
Date of Accident: February 9, 20xx

To Whom It Concerns:

I was involved in an automobile accident in which I received personal injuries and damage to my vehicle on February 9, 20xx at the intersection of 4th Street and Appian Way in San Dimas, Texas.

The other person involved in the accident was Henry Parks, 45 Webster Avenue, Hollowtown, Texas 12346. He was driving a red 1989 Chevrolet pickup with Texas license plate number B899 324.

At this time, I intend to proceed against Mr. Parks rather than file a claim under my own medical payments or collision coverages. However, I reserve the right to file a claim under either or both of those coverages.

Very truly yours,
Maria Jones
